What education level do I need to be a substitute teacher?

In most states, you are only required to have a high school diploma or equivalent GED to be a substitute teacher. In states that require a substitute certificate, a bachelor's degree is usually required. You can check your state below to see what is required.

*Note that some schools or districts may have higher education requirements than the state minimums.

  • Arizona
    • Public schools only - bachelor's degree to get a substitute certificate
    • Charter schools - HS diploma or equivalent GED
  • Florida
    • HS diploma or equivalent GED
  • Nevada
    • Bachelor's degree to get a substitute license
  • New York
    • HS diploma or equivalent GED
  • Texas
    • HS diploma or equivalent GED
  • Utah
    • HS diploma or equivalent GED

How do I enter my education level on Senya?

  1. Once you are logged in to your Senya account, click on the top area where you see your name and profile picture.
  2. Click on the blue button that says "Education - Add a Degree"
  3. Enter your degree level, field of study (if applicable), and school name.
  4. Click the "photo" tab at the top to upload an image or file to submit evidence of your education level. If the file type is not supported, you may email the photo or file to onboarding@senya.app.

What kind of evidence can I submit for my education?

Substitutes need to submit valid evidence for their education to be verified on the Senya platform. Check the categories below to see what is available for your circumstance.

Schools in the United States

For all levels of education in the United States, you may submit one of the following types of evidence:

  • A clear photo of your diploma
  • Unofficial transcripts or academic summary showing your name, the degree, and date it was awarded/conferred
  • A letter signed by the school registrar's office verifying your name, degree, and date it was awarded/conferred

Official transcripts are acceptable, but universities charge a fee, so you are encouraged to submit unofficial transcripts when available. You can access and download your unofficial transcripts or academic summary by using your student/alumni account at the school. If you need support, you should contact the school directly.

For high school, you typically need to contact the current registrar or office manager to get a copy of your transcripts or a letter verifying your diploma.

International Degrees

For all international degrees, you need to submit official transcripts. These must be sent digitally to onboarding@senya.app. Senya does not accept mailed transcripts. You can purchase official transcripts from your university; make sure to enter the email above as the destination.

If you have a teaching license in the United States, this can be submitted in place of official transcripts since the state has already verified your international education.

Do I get anything for having more education?

In some areas, schools offer more opportunities to substitutes with a higher level of education, and in some cases, substitutes with a college degree may also be paid a higher rate.

Schools also tend to offer long-term substitute jobs, and even permanent staff job offers, to substitutes with more education.
